History

Abadam is one of the sixteen Local Government Areas that constitute the Borno Emirate, a traditional state located in Borno State. In October 2014, Boko Haram fighters took over Abadam town, with at least 40 deaths, but fled after an attack by Multinational Joint Task Force troops. On 2 February 2015, the Nigerian Army said it had recaptured Abadam from Boko Haram, following joint military operations by Nigerian and Cameroonian forces, civilian forces, and three days of Chadian airstrikes. In February 2016 Borno State senator Baba Kaka Garbai stated that the group still controlled Abadam, and in August 2016 Major General Lucky Irabor also stated that the area was under militant control.
