Ohimini
About
Ohimini is a Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria, with its headquarters in the town of Idekpa-Okpikwu. The area covers 632 square kilometres and had a population of 71,482 at the 2006 census. The major district is Onyagede, which shares a boundary with Kogi State. The local government is largely agrarian, with farmers growing crops such as cassava, yams, millet, sorghum, rice and citrus fruits, and the Onyagede market is an important source of garri for trade with neighbouring states. The area also has deposits of bricks, clay, bentonite, bauxite and coal, and offers opportunities for agro-based industry and other investment.
History
Ohimini Local Government Area was created in December 1996 by the military regime of General Sani Abacha out of the old Otukpo Local Government of Idomaland, along with four other local government councils in the state: Agatu, Obi, Logo and Tarka. The name Ohimini comes from the River Ohimini, the largest river in the council, which cuts across the entire local government area. The creation of the local government brought great joy to its people, who believed that separation from Old Otukpo would bring accelerated development to them.
