History

Kwande Local Government Area was created out of the erstwhile Katsina-Ala Division on 3 February 1976, as part of the nationwide Local Government Reforms of 1976 undertaken by the military government of General Murtala Muhammed. The reform aimed to return power to civilians, spread government programmes to the grassroots and institutionalise the local government system in Nigeria, creating 301 local governments across the country. Before the 1976 reform, local government was less autonomous, with colonial-era Native Authorities serving as a channel for policy directed from Lagos. Elected councils were created towards independence, but their power was minimal after independence.
