The local government area is known for farming, its river harbour and a Nigerian naval base, and it hosts festivals such as the Ogbaru Boat Regatta Festival. Its towns and villages include Atani, Obeagwe, Oluta, Ochuche, Umunankwo, Okpoko, Odekpe and Umuzu.
History
Ogbaru people are farmers and were known as warriors in the past. They share clan lineage and boundaries with the Onitsha, Oguta, Anioma and Ndoni peoples. The Ogbaru people regard the Niger River waters flowing through their region as part of their territorial lands. The area is subject to frequent flooding because of the shallow depth of the river and heavy rainfall in the rainy season. A major flood in 2018 killed 12 people, and a flood in 2020 displaced 1000 people. A major flood in 2022 submerged many communities, and the National Emergency Management Agency reported that Ogbaru had the highest number of victims.
