History

Uruan was created in 1988 from Uyo Local Government Area. The Uruan people have preserved a seven-clan structure over the years, and their principal deity is Atakpor, a Great Mother deity associated with water. The Uruan language is derived from the proto-Ibibio language and is a variant of Ibibio, and the Uruan people are considered to be part of the Iboku groups. Some Uruan people migrated over centuries from the Rio del Rey region near Cameroon to the area now known as Uruan LGA, and some later migrated to Creek Town, Duke Town and Henshaw Town, where Efik families trace ancestral ties to Uruan villages.
