Oruk Anam
About
Oruk Anam is a Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Its indigenous population is largely made up of the Annang people, one of the minority tribes in Southeast Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Ikot Ibritam, and it is one of the eight Annang-speaking local government areas in the state. The area is largely made up of farmers, craftsmen and civil servants. It is a major gateway to Port Harcourt and Aba, with commercial activity along major road points such as Ekparakwa. Government institutions, including a general hospital in Ikot Okoro, police stations and schools, are located there, and the Akwa Ibom State University has a campus in Obio Akpa.
History
Oruk Anam consists of two former political units: the Oruk zone, which was a local government area with headquarters at Urua Anwa and was known as the Southern Annang County Council of the former Abak Division, and the Anam zone, which was Anam Local Government Area with headquarters at Ikot Akpan Essien and was called the Anam or Annang County Council in the former Opobo Division. In 1989, the two local government areas were merged into one.
