As a local government area, Ibiono-Ibom provides local administration for its towns and villages, including Obio Ibiono, Use Ikot Oku, Idoro, Ididep, Afaha Obio Eno, Ikot Usen, Ono, Afua, Use Ndon and Itukho. The area is also known for its traditional leadership, anchored by the paramount ruler known as Okuku of Ibiono Ibom.
History
The local government area was created out of Itu Local Government Area in December 1996. When it was created, Oko Ita was chosen as the local government headquarters to spread development across all regions of the LGA. Before the colonial British invasion in 1904, no central government existed among the people of the present-day area. The area is also associated with the Scottish missionary Mary Slessor, who died there in 1915; her cairn is located at Use Ikot Oku, where she lived.
