About

Ibeno is a local government area of Akwa Ibom State in southern Nigeria, lying on the eastern side of the Kwa Ibo River about 3 kilometres from its mouth. It occupies a vast coastal area bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and neighbouring areas including Mbo, Esit Eket, Eket, Onna and Eastern Obolo. The area is known for its long coastline, fishing settlements and oil exploration activities. It hosts oil operations by ExxonMobil (now Seplat), and fishing and farming are the main livelihoods. The people speak the Ibeno language and have many traditional institutions and cultural practices.

History

Ibeno Local Government Area was created out of the defunct Uquo-Ibeno Local Government Area on December 4, 1996, by a Federal government instrument. Before that, the people of Ibeno and Eket shared a local government area, and the area was later part of Ibeno-Edor and then Uquo Ibeno, with headquarters at Upenekang once it became a separate area. A major historical event was the arrival of Rev. Samuel Bill in Ibeno in December 1887 at the request of Ibeno chiefs to establish a Christian mission. The Qua Iboe Mission brought Christianity and western education to Ibeno, and from there they spread to Eket, Etinan and other parts of Ibibio and Igbo lands.
