Mayo-Belwa
About
Mayo-Belwa is a city and Local Government Area in central Adamawa State, Nigeria. It shares a boundary with Taraba State to the west and had an estimated population of about 204,200 people as of 2016.
History
The settlement was founded by the Bata of the Mayo Ine valley during their war with Lamido Lawal and was called Gabalwa. Lawal's forces gained control shortly after its establishment, resulting in a change to its current name, Mayo-Belwa, and the former inhabitants chose to relocate, eventually settling in Deniyobusa, also referred to as Demsa-Mosu. On the evening of 3 August 1974, a meteorite weighing about 5 kg fell in the town; it was sent to the Geological Survey of Nigeria for analysis and later loaned to the British Museum (Natural History) for further study.
