About

Girei is a town and local government area of Adamawa State, Nigeria, lying on the Benue River. The dominant group in the area are the Fulɓe or Fulani, with a substantial number of Bwatiye living in villages such as Greng and Labondo. The main occupations of the people are farming and cattle rearing, and the town is home to Radio Gotel.

History

In 1853, Lamido Muhammad Lawal led an expedition against the Bata of Bagale, who had resisted earlier Fulbe attacks and raided traders on a key trade route. After an intense two-month siege, Bagale was overcome and the stronghold razed, and Lamido Lawal founded Girei as a base for the siege. Following this, Fulbe grazing and settlement increased in the region, and Girei later became a hub for scholars who migrated to Fombina from across the Sokoto Caliphate.
