About

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is an examination board for English-speaking West African countries. It conducts exit examinations in Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia and the Gambia, and issues certificates to students who sit them.

History

The council was established in 1952 following a 1948 meeting between the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, the University of London School Examinations Matriculation Council and West African Departments of Education. Their appointed visitor, Dr. George Barker Jeffery, produced a report in 1950 recommending the council, and governments agreed to establish it. The legislative assemblies of Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and the Gambia passed an ordinance in December 1951, and Liberia later issued its own ordinance in 1974. In 2022 the council launched a digital certificate access and confirmation platform.
