Transmission Company of Nigeria
TCN
About
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is a federal government owned electric utility company in Nigeria, established in 2005 and headquartered in Abuja in the Federal Capital Territory. It is responsible for evacuating electric power generated by generating companies and wheeling it to distribution companies, providing the transmission infrastructure between them. TCN oversees the development and maintenance of Nigeria's transmission infrastructure, including high voltage cables, towers and transformers. Its licensed activities include electricity transmission, system operation and electricity trading, and it is a member of the West African Power Pool, supplying bulk power to Niger, Benin and Togo.
History
TCN was among the companies unbundled from PHCN during the presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo in 2005, backed by the Electric Power Sector Reform Act. It was incorporated in 2005 and granted a licence by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission in 2006, formed to ensure better coordination of electricity transmission in the country. In 2021 an independent system operator was introduced as a component of the company, responsible for planning, dispatch and control of electricity on the grid.
