About
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) is the main statutory body responsible for standardising and regulating the quality of all products in Nigeria. It sets and declares standards, certifies products, laboratories and systems, monitors imported and exported goods, and enforces standards against violators. SON's functions include certifying commercial and industrial products, registering standard marks and specifications, investigating product quality, compiling inventories of products requiring standardisation, and improving measurement accuracy. Its initiatives include the SON Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP) for imported goods and the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) for locally manufactured products. SON is a member of the International Organization for Standardization.
History
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria was established under Enabling Act Number 56 of December 1971, although it started functioning on January 1, 1970. The Act has been amended three times: Act Number 20 of 1976, Act Number 32 of 1984 and Act Number 18 of 1990. At the agency's 50th anniversary, the Director General announced that SON had adopted 213 Nigerian Industrial Standards to curb the proliferation of fake products. In March 2024, SON released 80 newly approved standards for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle operation in Nigeria.
