About
The Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) was a federal agency of the Nigerian state, operating under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and National Orientation, and responsible for the overall development of tourism in the country. It was the body that oversaw tourism planning and regulation at the federal level. The agency coordinated tourism development across Nigeria and operated zonal offices in several cities, each headed by a zonal coordinator. Its work included planning and development of the tourism sector nationally.
History
A Nigerian Tourist Association was established in 1962 without regulatory authority. In 1976, Decree No. 54 created the Nigeria Tourism Board, the country's first tourism regulatory body. The Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation was then established in 1992 by Decree No. 81, and a National Council on Commerce and Tourism was created to coordinate tourism planning and development. After the transition to civil government in 1999, the new Constitution limited the federal government's regulatory power over tourism to tourist traffic alone. In 2017, the Nigerian Senate voted to amend the 1992 Act, renaming the agency the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority and allowing it to set up a tour operating company, the National Travel Bureau.
