Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation
NNPC
About
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited is a state-owned oil company in Nigeria and the only entity licensed to operate in the country's petroleum industry. It partners with foreign oil companies to explore Nigeria's fossil fuel resources and runs operations across the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors. The company is headquartered in the NNPC Towers in Abuja and has zonal offices in cities including Lagos, Kaduna, Benin City, Port Harcourt and Warri, as well as an international office in London. It is described as the largest national oil company in Africa.
History
The company was established in 1977 as a corporation and was transformed into a limited liability company in July 2022. Following passage of the Petroleum Industry Act in August 2021, NNPC began operating as a commercial entity without relying on government funding and direct controls, with the aim of making it easier to access international capital markets. NNPC manages joint ventures between the Nigerian federal government and foreign multinational corporations, and in 2025 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu dissolved the board and appointed Bayo Ojulari as group chief executive officer, with Ahmadu Musa Kida as non-executive chairman.
