Nigerian Integrated Water Resources Commission
About
The Nigerian Integrated Water Resources Commission (NIWRC) is the agency established to regulate water resources in Nigeria. Its functions include issuing water use licences, controlling indiscriminate drilling of boreholes, preventing pollution of groundwater sources, implementing and enforcing water law, and managing bodies of water.
History
Since 2020, there have been several controversies surrounding the passing of the National Water Resources Bill. Much of the rejection centred on the bill's requirement that individuals obtain a licence before accessing borehole water, which many people believed should be free. The bill seeks to establish a regulatory framework for transboundary water resources in Nigeria and to provide for the equitable and sustainable development, management, use and conservation of Nigeria's inter-state surface water and groundwater resources.
