About

The National Broadcasting Commission is the broadcast regulator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It regulates and controls the broadcasting industry in Nigeria and advises the federal government on developments in the sector using scientific research and data analysis.

History

The commission was set up on August 24, 1992, by Decree 38 of 1992. It was later amended as an act of the National Assembly by Act 55 of 1999, and is now known as the National Broadcasting Commission Laws of the Federation 2004, CAP N11. The commission receives and considers applications for the establishment, ownership or operation of radio and television stations, cable television, direct satellite broadcast and other broadcasting media, including government-owned and privately owned stations. It recommends these applications through the Minister of Information to the President for the grant of radio and television licences. In March 2015, the commission appointed Inview Technology to enable digital switchover from analogue throughout the country, and licensed 10 set-top box manufacturers to support the process.
