Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission
About
The Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission is the Nigerian federal agency responsible for coordinating research and development activities on the use of atomic and nuclear energy in Nigeria. The commission works with the Federal Ministry of Power and has pursued nuclear power projects, including a 2024 partnership with the Centre for Energy Research and Training to build a nuclear reactor for power generation, and a 2025 memorandum of understanding with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power to expand nuclear cooperation in Africa.
History
The Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission was established in 1976. In May 2024 it announced a partnership with the Centre for Energy Research and Training to build a nuclear reactor for power generation. In May 2025, Adebayo Adelabu, the federal minister of power, disapproved of the commission's plan for four 1,200-megawatt nuclear plants and suggested modular reactors instead, in line with Nigeria's decentralized power model.
