Niger Delta Development Commission

About
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is a federal government agency established to develop the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Its mandate covers policy formulation, planning and implementation of projects in transport, health, employment, industrialisation, agriculture, housing, water, electricity and telecommunications. The commission also monitors projects funded by oil and gas companies, tackles environmental problems arising from oil exploration such as spillages and gas flaring, and trains and educates youths of the region to reduce hostilities and militancy.
History
The NDDC was established in 2000 by former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, largely in response to demands from the populous, ethnically diverse minority communities of the Niger Delta. In September 2008, President Umaru Yar'Adua announced the formation of a Niger Delta Ministry, with the commission to become a parastatal under the ministry. By 2021 more than 13,000 projects and programmes had been abandoned or left uncompleted, and President Muhammadu Buhari ordered a forensic audit of the commission covering 2001 to 2019. In December 2020 Buhari named Effiong Akwa as sole administrator, and in October 2022 a new Acting Managing Director, Engr Emmanuel Audu-Ohwavborua, was appointed.
