About

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency, known as NPHCDA, is a Federal Government of Nigeria agency set up to improve access to quality primary healthcare services, enhance immunization coverage, and promote sustainable health initiatives for communities across the nation. It operates nationwide and focuses on strengthening primary healthcare at the grassroots level, especially in underserved urban and rural communities. The agency supports the Federal Ministry of Health in developing and implementing primary healthcare programmes. It coordinates national health programmes, mobilises resources, works with state governments, local authorities and international partners, and runs initiatives such as immunization, disease control, maternal and child health, and healthcare infrastructure development.

History

The agency was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria on December 10, 1992, following the promulgation of Decree No. 29, to address deficiencies in Nigeria's primary healthcare system by creating a dedicated body responsible for its development, coordination and implementation. The NPHCDA has played a significant role in national health initiatives, including the national immunization programme, malaria control and polio eradication, and works towards integrating primary healthcare with secondary and tertiary levels of care.
