About

The National Population Commission (NPC) is the principal data mining commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is responsible for collecting, collating, analysing and publishing data about the Nigerian people and the economy. The commission operates under the supervision of the Office of the Presidency, and its head is appointed by the President of Nigeria. The commission is led by a Chairman, with a Director-General as administrative head, and a policy-making body of 37 Federal Commissioners organised into Standing Committees. It has statutory powers to collect, analyse and disseminate population and demographic data, undertake demographic sample surveys, compile migration and civil registration statistics, and monitor the country's population policy.

History

The National Population Commission was established by Section 140 (1) of the 1979 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It was suspended on 31 December 1983 following a military takeover, and was re-established by the National Population Commission Decree No. 23 of 1989. Prior to 1979 it was known as the National Census Board, which conducted the 1973 Census. The commission has been led by a series of chairmen, including Alhaji Abdulrahman Okene, Alhaji Shehu Musa, Chief Samu'ila Danko Makama, Chief Eze Festus Odimegwu, Eze Duruiheoma, and Nasir Isa Kwarra, whom the Senate confirmed on 15 October 2020. The commission conducted the 1991 census and the first population and housing census in 2006, which used GPS and satellite imagery.
