About
The National Open University of Nigeria is a public university based in Abuja, Nigeria, and is owned and funded by the federal government. It specialises in open and distance learning, allowing students from all walks of life to study at their own pace, and offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across several faculties. The university operates under the oversight of the National Universities Commission, which regulates academic standards for Nigerian universities. Its Governing Council, headed by a pro-chancellor, sets institutional policy, while the vice-chancellor is the chief executive responsible for daily administration. Students learn through online platforms, study centres and course materials, and are assessed through tutor-marked assignments and examinations.
History
The university was initially established on 22 July 1983 by the federal government of Nigeria as a springboard for open and distance learning in Nigeria. It was suspended by the government on 25 April 1984. Its resuscitation began on 12 April 2001 under the former President of Nigeria, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo. At take-off, pioneer student enrollment stood at 32,400. In 2016, vice chancellor Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu moved the university from its administrative headquarters in Victoria Island, Lagos, to its permanent headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.
