About

The National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) is a Nigerian federal institution responsible for developing drugs, biological products and pharmaceutical raw materials. It conducts quality-assurance tests, researches locally manufactured medicines and sets guidelines for their production. The institute is based in Abuja and operates under the Federal Ministry of Health. Its work includes developing herbal and phytomedicine products, such as Niprisan for sickle cell disorders and Niprimune as an adjunct for managing COVID-19.

History

The institute was founded in 1987 as a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2001 it was moved to the Federal Ministry of Health. In August 2018 NIPRD received ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for meeting international standards for testing medicines, food, cosmetics, agricultural products and herbal products. In 2019 it announced six traditional herbal products for treating Ebola, malaria, sickle cell anaemia and other diseases. In August 2021 the African Export-Import Bank awarded grants of $400,000 to boost local production of active pharmaceutical ingredients. In 2015 and 2016 the institute was the subject of controversies involving alleged job racketeering and alleged embezzlement of grant funds under its then Director General, Prof Karniyus Gamaniel, who denied the allegations.
