About

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is a public service institution established by the NITDA Act 2007 as the ICT policy implementing arm of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy of Nigeria. It is responsible for developing programmes that support ICT-related activities across the country.

History

ICT related activities started in Nigeria in 1950. NITDA was commissioned by the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo through a bill providing for the establishment of the National Information Technology Development Agency, which became law in 2007 as the NITDA Act. Operations of NITDA started in 2001, six years before the bill was passed into law. The agency started operations in Abuja with 30 computers, and within its first three years supplied 5,700 computer systems to over 187 educational institutions, including universities, secondary schools and primary schools. In 2020 it announced it would train 75,000 youths in Kaduna State in information technology, and in 2022 it organised the Digital Economy Employability Programme, aimed at training over 200,000 Nigerians.
