National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency
NESREA
About
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) is an environmental agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria. It works to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for Nigerians. It functions as a parastatal enterprise of the Federal Ministry of Environment and is headed by a director general who is also its chief executive officer. NESREA enforces 34 National Environmental Regulations covering human activities that harm the environment. Its responsibilities include monitoring processes and equipment, ensuring compliance with set standards, disciplining violators, conducting public investigations, enforcing environmental impact assessments, and proposing changes to the minister to maintain environmental quality. It also handles illegal wildlife trade cases and waste management policies such as e-waste and battery control.
History
NESREA was established in 2007 by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency Act (No. 20 of 2007). It was created after the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA), established by Decree 58 of 1988, had its functions folded into the Federal Ministry of Environment, as growing environmental challenges and global sustainable development efforts created a need for a dedicated enforcement body. The act establishing NESREA was amended in 2018 to accommodate changes relating to the appointment of council members, stiffer penalties for defaulters, and other related matters. The amendment was signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
