National Board for Arabic And Islamic Studies
NBAIS
About
The National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) is a Nigerian government organisation tasked with planning and implementing Arabic and Islamic studies curriculum in Nigeria. It also acts as an examination and regulatory body, conducting annual examinations for senior secondary students registered with the board. The board was originally focused on the northern part of Nigeria but was mandated in 2011 to cover the entire country. It conducts examinations such as the Senior Arabic and Islamic Secondary School Certificate Examination, the Tahfeez Examination for students majoring in Qur'anic Sciences, and a science examination for the conventional curriculum.
History
The board was founded in 1960 by Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto. It was later transferred to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1969, and began as a board serving the northern part of Nigeria with a few schools and colleges under its tutelage. In February 2011, at the 57th meeting of the National Council on Education held in Sokoto, the board was recognised and approved as a national examination and regulatory body covering the whole country, with over 900 recognised schools and colleges. Its headquarters was later moved from Zaria to Rigachikun in Kaduna State under former executive secretary Muhammad Shafiu Abdullahi.
