About

The National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) is a Nigerian federal agency established in 2001 under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology. It implements policies, explores resources, conducts research, and promotes, coordinates and develops biotechnology in Nigeria.

History

NABDA also controls and supervises the introduction of genetically modified organisms into Nigeria. In recent years it has announced work on biogas digesters, local production of Coronavirus testing kits with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, research into Lassa fever drugs, locally produced yoghurt starter cultures, livestock genetic experiments, and the release of new crop varieties to farmers. The agency has also faced controversies, including a 2017 EFCC arrest of its then Director General, Professor Lucy Jumeyi Ogbadu, over alleged diversion of public funds, staff protests in 2020 over unpaid promotion arrears, and criticism in 2022 over the distribution of genetically modified cowpea seeds to farmers.
