National Agency For Science and Engineering Infrastructure
NASENI
About
The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) is a federal government agency in Nigeria. Its core mandate is to manage the research, development, and reverse engineering of capital goods to drive indigenous industrialization. NASENI operates outside the traditional civil service structure to foster technological innovation. It focuses on manufacturing spare parts, scientific equipment, electronic components, and agricultural machinery, and transfers developed technologies and patents to local entrepreneurs and Small and Medium Scale Enterprises to reduce reliance on foreign imports. The agency works through development institutes across Nigeria's geopolitical zones, including the Electronics Development Institute in Awka and the Engineering Materials Development Institute in Akure.
History
NASENI was established in 1992 under the Presidency by the Nigerian Federal Government, based on the recommendations of the White Paper Committee on the 1991 Report of a 150-member National Committee on Engineering Infrastructure. That committee comprised scientists, engineers, administrators, civil servants, economists, lawyers, bankers and industrialists. The agency has had several heads over time, including Professor Gordian O. Ezekwe (1992 to 1997), Dr. Timothy I. Obiaga (1997 to 2003), Professor Olusegun O. Adewoye (2003 to 2012) and Dr. Mohammed Sani Haruna (2012 to 2023). Dr. Bashir Gwandu held the post briefly in 2023 before Khalil Halilu was appointed.
