National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control
NAFDAC
About
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is a Nigerian federal agency under the Federal Ministry of Health. It regulates and controls the manufacture, importation, exportation, advertisement, distribution, sale, and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, and packaged water. The agency is headquartered in Abuja and is headed by Director General Mojisola Adeyeye.
History
NAFDAC was established in 1993 to counter illicit and counterfeit products in Nigeria, following problems such as a 1989 incident in which over 150 children died from paracetamol syrup containing diethylene glycol. It replaced the earlier Directorate of Food and Drug Administration and Control, which had been deemed ineffective. On 1 January 1994 it was officially established as a parastatal of the federal ministry of health. In August 2000 the management was dissolved, and in April 2001 a new management under Dora Akunyili was inaugurated, which introduced new policies to combat fake drugs.
