Federal Judicial Service Commission
FJSC
About
The Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) is a constitutional body in Nigeria established under Section 153(1) of the Constitution of Nigeria of 1999, as amended. Its main job is to advise the National Judicial Council on nominations for key judicial appointments, such as the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justices of the Supreme Court and the President of the Court of Appeal. The FJSC can also recommend the removal of judicial officers, manages certain court personnel, organises training programmes, publishes judicial materials and works to support the rule of law and judicial reform. Its headquarters is in the Supreme Court Complex in Abuja.
History
The FJSC's origins lie in the 1979 Constitution, which created a Federal Judicial Service Commission chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria. The earlier Federal Judicial Service Committee was dissolved in 1988 during military rule. After the return to democracy in 1999, the present Commission was reconstituted to safeguard judicial independence and protect appointment and disciplinary processes.
