Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria
CRIN
About
The Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) is a federal research institute based in Ibadan, Oyo State, dedicated to improving the productivity and quality of cocoa in Nigeria and globally. Its main work includes research on cocoa, kola and coffee, and providing facilities for teaching and research on these crops. CRIN supports farmers in the cocoa-producing states of Nigeria by releasing improved varieties, training on best practices such as flavour improvement, planting, grafting, fermentation, drying and packaging, and running skill acquisition sessions and extension workshops for stakeholders in the cocoa industry.
History
The institute was established on 1 December 1964 in Ibadan as a successor autonomous research organisation to the Nigerian Substation of the defunct West African Cocoa Research Institute (WACRI), which had been based in Tafo, Ghana. It was set up by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Nigeria Research Institute Act of 1964, which also established research institutes for palm oil, coffee and cola. CRIN released new varieties of cocoa in 2013.
